Released to complement the BBC TV series of the same name, this compilation chronicles the musical developments of eight of the biggest groups of the 1980s (along with assorted others). The regular '80s compilation tracks (such as "Come On Eileen", "Look of Love" and "Venus") are well represented on this CD but what makes this so distinctive is that you get double (if not triple) helpings of some of the eight featured groups (i.e. Culture Club, The Human League, Bananarama, The Smiths, Spandau Ballet, Dexy's Midnight Runners, Madness, Soft Cell). The collection reminds you how radical but safe early '80s music was, and how the most cutting-edge and commercially minded music emerged from the provinces (Human League, OMD and Frankie Goes To Hollywood) rather than the capital. However, rather than being a compilation of the whole decade (as it perhaps claims to be), this is an anthology of the highlights of early '80s music before the excesses of Stock, Aitken and Waterman and acid house. --John Galilee
