Description
A primary purveyor of soul music in the 60s and 70s, Stax Records also was on the cutting edge of blues during those decades. The Memphis companys blues innovations continue to reverberate throughout the genre, especially its productions of Albert King, which wedded his intense Mississippi-honed style to punching soul grooves and horn riffs. Three of Kings most gripping performances are included in this varied Stax blues retrospective, along with two each by fellow Mississippi-born singing guitarists Little Milton and John Lee Hooker and two by Detroit-based harmonica ace, Little Sonny. Many of the firms soul singers also cut blues-based material, with Rufus Thomas, Joe Hicks, Johnnie Taylor, Otis Redding, Mable John, and Ruby Johnson being represented here. Other highlights include guitarist Steve Croppers instrumental reading of Albert Kings Oh, Pretty Woman, Californian bluesman Jimmy McCracklins Tennessee twist on his classic Just Got To Know, and banjo-picking Memphis blues pioneer Gus Cannons reprise of his romping Walk Right In with jug and washboard support.
