The 19th Century is the most important period in the development of the harp and the bassoon. Sebastian Erard was the inventor of the double movement harp ("a fourchettes"). Paris had long been the world center for harp music, attracting composers to write an even vaster and above all virtuoso repertory for this new instrument. The bassoon dates from the 17th century, preceded by the dulcian which had become unpopular. During the 18th century the bassoon changed very little (only four keys), butmany improvements followed most notably by the instrument makers Savary in Paris and Grenser in Dresden.
