Description
Crest Records was a Los Angeles-based offshoot of a successful music publishing company, American Music. AM's principal copyrights were country music hits recorded by stars on bigger labels but during the '50s and early '60s they tried out a variety of musical styles through their own outlet. The 34 tracks here showcase this entertaining mix, encompassing jump blues, R&B, country, rockabilly and pop. Among the better known titles there is Eddie Cochran's first solo release, "Skinny Jim"; a double-sider by one 'Boogaloo' (Kent Harris), one side of which, "Cops & Robbers", was covered by Bo Diddley, the other, "Clothes Line", revived by The Coasters as "Shopping For Clothes"; the hit tribute to Buddy Holly, Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens, "Three Stars", by Tommy Dee; early successes by Glen Campbell, "Turn Around And Look At Me" and Bobby Edwards, "You're The Reason"; and the original version of "Long Black Limousine" by Vern Stovall, more famously recorded by Elvis Presley during his late '60s comeback period.
