All of these recordings were made in the late 90s by Mazur Media incoproduction with Sony Classical however, with a few exceptions, were neverreleased. With the exception of the Serenade for string orchestra, this compilationpresents rarely-performed works by Tchaikovsky and a resurrected piece ofrepertoire: Arensky s Variations on a Theme by Tchaikovsky. Arensky, a studentof Rimsky-Korsakov, chose the fifth song from Tchaikovsky s Songs for Childrenas the theme for his variations. Initially it was conceived as a slow movement ofhis second string quartet, but was arranged for string orchestra at a later date byArensky himself.
