Description
In an age when we like to give ourselves certificates for everything from investing in people to cycling proficiency, you might wonder why we celebrate the British jazz scene every year with the BBC Jazz Awards. Aren't they just an excuse for a party, a gathering of celebrities, and gongs for the same old gang each year? Well, the answer is no, they're not any of those things. This year's nominations reflect the breadth of taste that BBC listeners have. Having heard Jacqui Dankworth co-present a series on jazz vocalists, it's good to see her represented here as a singer in her own right, as well as Anita Wardell, who was featured in Jacqui's selections, but and this is where the awards come into their own then to find that Julia Biel and Polly Gibbons, both names who have sprung onto the national scene recently, have also been singled out for consideration. I'm glad, too, to see the ever-touring Stacey Kent back in the reckoning, alongside Clare Teal and Ian Shaw. Ian has done much to help and promote other singers, but here he's recognised for his own work, alongside such established figures as Elaine Delmar and Georgie Fame. Instrumentally, this year's selection is even broader. Messrs Coxon and Wales (Spring Heel Jack) have done much to ensure we hear such experimental talents as John Tchicai and Matthew Shipp in Britain. John Taylor, long a musician's musician, is finally beginning to get the acclaim here that he's had on the continent for years. Amid such venerable figures as Bobby Wellins and Ronnie Rae, we find also Jools Holland, whose Rhythm and Blues Orchestra are ambassadors for jazz, plus master saxophonist Alan Barnes, and rising stars Andrew McCormack and Polar Bear.
