The Gushibian Movement was a thunderbolt that transformed the climate of modern Chinese historiography. This book approaches the movement as a historical phenomenon in the development of modern academic thought, focusing on key issues in modern intellectual history such as why the movement erupted, what characterized its emergence, and what impact it brought about. The study argues that the most critical factor leading to the movement was the historical interpretation by the New Text School in the late Qing period, while the intricate intellectual and academic environment of the late Qing and early Republican era was particularly significant. Gu Jiegang's personal "daring breakthrough" acted as the catalyst for the movement. Additionally, the book examines three dimensions of the issue: first, what the original ideas of the thinkers actually were and how these ideas related to the intellectual traditions they inhabited; second, what the thinkers actually accomplished; and third, what influence the achievements of these thinkers had in the course of historical development and how later generations interpreted their actions.
In describing historical phenomena, the book distinguishes between "psychological facts" and "historical facts," positing that both reasonable and unreasonable ideas can exert tremendous influence in history.
