Description
After the 'phoney war' between the beginning of hostilities on 3rd September, 1939 and April 1940, the Germans made rapid attacks on a number of European countries. This blitzkrieg pushed British troops out of Europe, ending with the rescue of more than 300,000 men from the beaches of Dunkirk. With Europe secure, Hitler's plan, codenamed 'Operation Sealion', was to invade Britain. In order to do this he had to defeat the RAF. So began the Battle of Britain. This book tells the full story, with original photographs of the events which took place in the summer of 1940. Despite heavy losses and the victory, the heroes of the Battle of Britain had little time to celebrate. They had helped fight off an invasion but they continued to be needed to protect the country from continued air attack.
