John GalsworthyJohn Galsworthy (1867-1933) was educated at Harrow and New College, Oxford, where he took a degree in law. His first book of stories was published in 1898., but his fame as a novelist rests mainly on his great series of novels, `The Man of Property' (1906), `In Chancery' (1920), and `To Let' (1921), collectively known as `The Forsyte Saga'. In these and in a later series, `A Modern Comedy' (1929), he gives a complete picture of the property-conscious Victorian upper-middle class, part of a rigid social order whose values and standards were shattered and finally destroyed during and after the First World War. Galsworthy's best work is characterized by elegance of style, ironic humour, and a deep sense of humanity. In 1932 he was awarded the Nobel prize for literature.Galsworthy was also a dramatist, and many of his plays deal with social problems. Among these are `Strife' (1909), the story of an industrial conflict, and `Justice' (1910), a criticism of the existing prison system.`The First and the Last', with its characteristic theme of social and moral problems is taken from a collection of Gals- worthy's stories entitled `Caravan' and published in 1925.
