Description
Welsh theatre in schools is a subject little-known to the general public, even to those who may be quite aware of other art forms. This work is usually seen only by children and their teachers, in a school or college setting, and thus attracts little attention from critics or pundits, or from the general theatregoer. It is, however, a thriving and creative branch of Welsh theatre, staging in excess of thirty productions every year and commissioning new writing from both new and established Welsh playwrights. Committed to the advancement of knowlege and understanding at it's profoundest level, this field of theatre considers that young minds, no matter what their age, can confront emotional, social and political truths. It is, as such, deeply serious, exploring concepts such as displacement, social change, violence, family trauma and communication through provocative, funnt and poetic scripts, unconventional actor-audience relationships and inventive production. These plays are working scripts of the eight companies who form the theatre in education and theatre for young people provision in Wales, each with a regional remit. They confront issues of local and national identity as well as the myriad concerns which face young people growing up in today's Wales.
