Classic Shaw Brothers' swordplay and kung fu film, directed by Chang Cheh, with fight choreography by Liu Chiu Liang. The story concerns the activities of assassin Chang and his brother Hung, both small-time highwaymen. They befriend an ambitious soldier Ma, after attempting to rob him. The trio swear allegiance and gather about them a private army in the mountains, but the arrival of Hung's beautiful wife Mai unleashes hidden desires and Ma is forced to leave to join the Imperial Army. Years later, now a General, Ma summons his two brothers to join him in a war against the rebels. Their victories bring fame and fortune, but Ma is still besotted with Mai, and plots Hung's murder. This treachery forces Chang into a one-man revenge war.
