Vocalist Tessa Souter's Beyond the Blue sees this fearless innovator joined by an all star supporting cast including pianist Steve Kuhn and his trio (David Finck, bass, and Billy Drummond, drums) tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm, vibraphonist Joe Locke and Gary Versace on accordion. On this, her second CD for Motema, she raises the bar once again in a programme of highly personal jazz interpretations of twelve classical melodies by Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin and others.
Co-produced by Jazz at Lincoln Center's Todd Barkan with Tetsuo Hara, the album includes three familiar standards The Lamp Is Low (Ravel), My Reverie (Debussy) and Baubles, Bangles and Beads (Borodin). The remaining pieces are based on works by other composers and have lyrics penned by Souter, all of which reflect her strong feel for narrative and story-telling instincts.
