Tomislav Gotovac (1937-2010) was one of the most important Croatian and Yugoslav artists in the second half of the 20th century. He has left an indelible trace in the domains of film, visual arts and performance, and has influenced a several generations of artists that came after him. In the last fifteen years, there is a surge of interest for his pioneering oeuvre, and his work is becoming ever-more present at the important exhibitions and in the relevant museums on the international level. With this monograph, Slobodan Šijan, a renowned film director and one of great artist’s closest friends, payed a due homage to Gotovac and his unique understanding of the art of cinema. The book comprises almost 400 pages and its 48 chapters function as the 48 “frames” of the analysis, quotes, sketches and commentaries, but also as an attempt at understanding some of the processes that had shaped the films of Gotovac and informed his artistic techniques. Šijan extensively uses his own memories, narration, testimonies, archive materials. His creative combination of all of these materials results with the book about one artist, written by another artist, in an uniquely artistic way. The book can be read as a film due to the abundance of the visual materials it comprises, its skilful graphic design, and its composition that is informed by the principles of montage/collage. This approach represents a reconstruction of Gotovac’s interaction with the reality, film and art as such, and it enables the book to function simultaneously as a monograph about one author, a kind of personal contextualization of the tumultuous artistic period, and the unique cultural and sociological study about the Yugoslav region in the 1960s and onwards Tomislav Gotovac lived his life by taking the words “reality” and “movie” as pertaining to the same thing. With this edition he is given the first literal and complete monograph in the English language.
