Le due vite narrate sono quelle del prozio dell'autore, Shanti Behari Seth, e di sua moglie Henny Caro. Per alleviare la solitudine in cui precipita Shanti dopo la morte della moglie, avvenuta nel 1989, la madre di Vikram Seth propone al figlio di "intervistarlo", e durante alcuni mesi di conversazioni l'autore prende appunti per scrivere un libro su di lui.
