Together with her partner Alexei von Jawlensky and her artist friends Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky, Marianne von Werefkin was among the main protagonists of the classical avant-garde. She was active in the circle of the Neue Künstlervereinigung München and finally the Blauer Reiter. Her works, which depict café and circus scenes, factory workers and laundresses in expressive colour contrasts and abstract forms, reflect her outstanding artistic talent and continue to fascinate to this day.
