Zur Untersuchung und Begutachtung strafrechtlicher Fälle bot sich im Betrieb der 1896 eröffneten psychiatrischen Klinik in Gießen bald reichlich Gelegenheit. Die Zahl der Gutachten stieg aus einer Reihe von Gründen außerordentlich rasch an. Die Klinik wurde nicht nur von den drei Landgerichten des Großherzogtums oft zur Begut achtung von Untersuchungsgefangenen herangezogen, sondern auch von den Strafanstalten des Landes wegen des raschen Aufnahme verfahrens bei den in dem Strafvollzug ausbrechenden Geistes störungen sehr in Anspruch genommen.
