Dead Storm
That night while recovering he is told the tale about "Dead Storms." Rare, violent blizzards that harbor hideous creatures called Baykak, monstrous beings that live off human flesh. With the storm apparently gone, members of the Krughoff family, father, son, and their hired hand, set out the next morning to feed the cattle stranded on the range. That night they fail to *. When they are still missing the following morning, Reed and Esther set out on horseback in search of them. Eventually the wagon is found and, with it, the remains of the father. Later they discover Samuel, in shock and barely alive.
The storm retur0ns that night and with it come the Baykak. For a night and a day they hold off these insidious creatures but when the ranch catches fire they are forced to make their last stand in the howling wastes of the Dead Storm.
