Perhaps the only concept album ever inspired by the life of a dead poet (in this case Pablo Neruda), Red Rider s third album, Neruda, is a veritable greatest hits package, containing some of the band s most consistently excellent work. In fact, the first four tunes-- Power, Human Race, Can t Turn Back and Napoleon Sheds His Skin --were all successful singles. However, any of the 10 new wave-influenced tracks originally recorded for Neruda (there are three bonus tracks on this CD) could have been just as successful. All the individual aspects that made the band so distinctive and exciting--Tom Cochrane s passionate vocals, Ken Greer s eerie slide guitar work and the atmospheric keyboards of Steve Sexton--mesh together here to create a cohesive body of work, unified by the lyrical themes of escape and hope. So, considering how effectively these 10 songs fit together, it s curious as to why Red Rider s label, Capitol Records, chose to include White Hot from the band s debut Don t Fight It, Lunatic Fringe from As Far As Siam and the single version of Light in the Tunnel/Human Race. While those are essential tracks individually, their presence here disrupts the flow of this otherwise immaculate piece. Imagine the same label tacking a few singles onto the end of the Beatles Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band. No one would stand for that. Though not as an important record as Sgt. Pepper s, Red Rider s Neruda deserves to be shown a little more respect. --Adem Tepedelen
