Woods likes to describe himself as a "soldier of jazz" and he functions throughout the proceedings as a sort of master sergeant, uncorking theme-and-development solos that are models of melodic logic, throwing down wicked runs, interpolating subtle signifying quotes, projecting the soaring, voicelike tone that has marked the jazz landscape for half-a-century. Following his example, the band sustains his exacting standard of excellence. The band is completed by Bill Charlap (piano), Brian Lynch (trumpet), Steve Gilmore (bass) and Bill Goodwin (drums).
