Hiram Otis, un ricco ministro americano, si trasferisce in Inghilterra con tutta la famiglia nei pressi della cittadina di Ascot, acquistando un magnifico e antico castello inglese. La fortezza è, però, infestata dal fantasma di Sir Simon, scorbutico nobiluomo del tardo Cinquecento, costretto a passare l¿eternità tra le mura del castello finché un¿antica e misteriosa profezia non verrà compiuta. Ma Hiram Otis, intriso di quello spirito commerciale e pratico tipico degli americani, non si cura affatto del soprannaturale. Sir Simon è determinato a perseguitare i nuovi inquilini, ma sarà la moderna famiglia americana ad avere la meglio sulle antiche tradizioni e a mandare all¿aria con allegria tutti i tentativi malevoli del fantasma, facendolo piombare in una profonda depressione. Tra un susseguirsi di situazioni comiche in cui macchie di sangue secolari vengono pulite in pochi secondi da potentissimi smacchiatori di ultima generazione, il racconto nasconde una profonda morale, come, del resto, tutte le opere del grande Oscar Wilde.
