Guide to the Soviet Navy

0 - Default Title
Description
This fourth edition of Guide to the Soviet Navy provides a comprehensive description of the Soviet fleet of the late 1980s. It shows a fleet that is advancing in almost every category of naval capability and one that is, by several significant measures, overtaking the U.S. Navy. All of the ships of the Soviet Navy are included here, complete with technical data and additional information not found in other unclassified publications. Many never-before-published photographs are also included, along with detailed drawings of new ships. Unlike most annual reference works that only tabulate the numbers of ships and give brief descriptions of them, Guide to the Soviet Navy provides a thorough review and analysis of the ships and their weapon and electronic systems. To provide a complete perspective of the Soviet Navy, this book also offers informative discussions of naval and fleet organization, strategy and tactics, manpower, aviation, naval infantry, coastal defense forces, bases, ports, and shipbuilding. Concise historical summaries introduce most chapters, because a navy is largely the product of decisions made many years—even decades—before its warships appear and because Soviet institutions are deeply rooted in history. Brief chapters describe the massive Soviet merchant, research, and fishing fleets, and the navies of the other Warsaw Pact nations, which would support Soviet naval operations in wartime. This fourth edition reflects extensive updating, especially the sections dealing with submarines, surface ships, and aircraft. Two new chapters have been added: "Operations and Exercises" describes the growth and scope of naval activities during the post-World War II period; and "KGB Maritime Border Troops" examines the coastal security force of the Soviet Union. Also new in this edition is a biographic commentary on Admiral S.G. Gorshkov, the long-serving head of the Soviet Navy, and his successor, Admiral V.N. Chernavin.
