Description
One of the landmarks in the rediscovery of the music of Bach was Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's arrangement of the St Matthew Passion in 1829. In 1841 that version was performed again in Leipzig, but with the reinstatement of 4 previously omitted arias. This 2CD set contains a highly informative booklet on the history of this work and libretto in German, French and English. Christoph Spering conducts Das Neue Orchester and Chorus Musicus. Critical review: "This world premiere recording would have to rank as one of the most important and fascinating releases of the CD age"...... Soundscapes.
