Baker Dill (Matthew McConaughey) is de kapitein van een vissersboot, waarmee hij toeristen rondvaart door een rustige tropische enclave, genaamd Plymouth Island. Wanneer zijn ex-vrouw Karen (Anne Hathaway) plotseling opduikt, smeekt ze Dill wanhopig om haar te beschermen tegen haar gewelddadige man (Jason Clarke). Samen bedenken ze een plan om Karen’s ex-man om zeep te helpen. Al snel wordt Dill terug gezogen in een leven dat hij probeerde te vergeten.
