William Morris (1834-1896) était un artiste, écrivain, socialiste et actite anglais. Il a été l'un des principaux fondateurs du mouvement britannique des arts et de l'artisanat, mieux connu en tant que concepteur de papier peint et de tissus à motifs, écrivain de poésie et de fiction et pionnier du mouvement socialiste en Grande-Bretagne. Morris et ses amis ont formé un mouvement artistique, la fraternité préraphaélite. Ils ont évité la fabrication industrielle tawdry des arts décoratifs et de l'architecture et ont favorisé un à l'artisanat artis, élevant les artisans au statut d'artistes. Il a épousé la philosophie selon laquelle l'art devrait être abordable, fait à la main, et qu'il ne devrait pas y avoir de hiérarchie des médiums artistiques.
