The Western Rif: geological complexity and terrain instability

0 - Default Title
Description
This work presents a detailed geological study of the area between Bab Taza and Bab Berred, along the RN2 national road in Morocco's western Rif. The area lies in a complex structural context, at the transition between the Inner Domain (limestone Dorsale), the flysch nappes (Beni Ider, Tisirène, Melloussa) and the Outer Domain (Tangier unit). The methodology combines fine stratigraphic analysis and petrographic characterization, highlighting the lithological and structural diversity of the region. The results show that the region is structured by a stack of allochthonous nappes, major thrust faults and offsets (e.g. Jebha-Chrafate accident). Gravitational movements (landslides, rockfalls) are frequent, favored by the pelitic nature of the formations and the rugged topography. This study provides an essential basis for understanding the tectonic-sedimentary evolution of this mountainous region, and offers keys for managing the risks of terrain instability along road axes.
