Description
I read this as a paperback quite a few years ago, and have probably almost worn the pages out by now having read it so many times. The characters really come alive, all of them seem to have that get up and go in the face of hardships. The main story features about a foot race across America, and is set in the time of real need, which is why most of them join in such a demanding race, in terms of "blisters" and strained muscles, that come from pounding the miles and miles of ground between the west coast and the east coast. Hugh the Scotsman, "Doc"Cole the veteran American who sells on the side his remedies that "cure" all ills, Kate a beautiful American woman, previously a burlesque dancer, little Martinez from Mexico running to save his village, and Morgan the ex boxer, also running is an Englishman, Lord Peter Thurleigh. Everyone of these people are running for the biggest amount of money they have ever known. It's a priveledge to read about them although it is only a work of fiction and I feel it will uplift all who read this novel. Of course on the way across America ,the runners meet a lot of characters in the various towns and have more adventures than they ever dream possible. The promoter of the race is Charles C. Flanagan who with his helper Willard get the runners on the road, and keep them on it through thick and thin.
