[Apocrypha in the Luther Bible. Introductories and Bible Texts] The Apocrypha are biblical books that are contained in the Greek Old Testament (the Septuagint), but not in the Hebrew Bible. They provide a vivid picture of the spiritual and religious situation of Judaism shortly before the events depicted in the Gospels. Martin Luther described the Apocrypha as »books not equal to the Holy Scriptures, yet useful and good to read«. The Apocrypha were already included in his translation of the Bible from 1534; they were assembled in a separate section between the Old Testament and the New Testament. In the 2017 revision of the Luther Bible parts of the Apocrypha were newly translated from the Septuagint. This volume provides the revised Bible text, introductions to the various books, and articles about their origin and impact.
