Max von Oppenheim was a German lawyer, diplomat, ancient historian, and archaeologist who lived during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He was born into the Oppenheim family, a prominent German Jewish banking dynasty. Oppenheim was a keen amateur archaeologist and ethnologist. He left his career as a diplomat, and went on to discover the site of Tell Halaf in Syria.
