Che cosa c'è dietro quel soprannome, Pan e Pera, con cui Ugo Manera è conosciuto nell'ambiente alpinistico torinese? Neppure lui, il destinatario, ha ricordi chiari. Sta di fatto che quel Pan e Pera, l'equivalente in dialetto piemontese di "pane e pietra", fissa efficacemente la smodata passione di Manera per l'arrampicata e definisce le due anime di uno scalatore tra i più attivi del dopoguerra. Il pane Ugo fin da giovanissimo se lo guadagna in fabbrica, prima come operaio, poi con incarichi via via di maggior responsabilità. La pietra, quella delle montagne di molti angoli del pianeta, lo vede protagonista di innumerevoli salite, raccontate in questo volume.
