The class 55 Deltic diesel-electric locomotives have now passed into history, but they have since earned the reputation of being the fastest form of motive power on British Rail. Their following is now equal to that of many steam locomotives. Developed from an aeroplane diesel engine concept, the design was followed through to an 18-cylinder marine version, and was finally developed for use in a high-powered, lightweight locomotive fitted with two of these engines. The outstanding performance of this prototype led to the use of a fleet of 22 others, which replaced the high-speed LNER Pacific steam engines then in service. As well as the high-powered version there were the 'Baby Deities,' 10 general-purpose locomotives built with a single nine-cylinder diesel engine; their development and performance is also included and assessed.
