C'era una volta, nella bassa padana, un pontescuro costruito con pietre, sangue e nebbia, in mezzo al vuoto dei campi. Intorno al ponte, sulle due rive che annoda, sono sorti poi un castello, dove abitano da sempre i padroni, e un villaggio, Pontescuro, dove abita da sempre la malora. Ovunque intorno, la nebbia, antica e onnisciente. Nel 1922, anno di marce e violenza, la bellissima Dafne Casadio, la figlia del padrone, viene trovata morta con un nastro rosso intorno al collo. La nebbia, il fiume, la ghiandaia, la blatta sanno chi è stato a stringere quel nastro rosso fino al buio; ma di tutte le anime che vivono a Pontescuro, sarà l'unica innocente a essere accusata del delitto.
