Carmen Suite/Canciones Espa.

0 - Default Title
Description
several European composers of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were fascinated with the music of Spain - the unique shape and style of Spanish melody, the colorful scales and harmonies, and the characteristic sound of the flamenco guitar. Bietz was interested in Spanish flavour purely as a theatrical tool. Although segments of "Carmen" were derived from gipsy music, the composer used this only as a background to the plot. The present arrangement follows the traditional orchestral suite with the omission of "the Changing of the Guard" and the "March of the Smugglers," which are considered unsuited for guitar transcription. The suite includes a "Seguidilla," which is derived from the flamenco dance of the same name. Castanets have been added to the sound of the four guitars. Around the time of "Carmen" the Spanish zarzuela had developed to it's high point. It was a colorful type of musical theater, involving popular-style songs and native dances. Ruperto was Chapi was one of the masters of the form. "La Revoltosa" (The Mischievous One, 1897), considered to be his master piece, is not a full-length zarzuela, ut rather a sainete, or one-act theater piece.
