One of 101 titles in the St. Joseph Picture Book Series, this book by popular author Father Lovasik, S.V.D., provides children with simple explanations of the life of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha. Saint Kateri Tekakwitha is also known as the 'Lily of the Mohawks' for she was born in what is now New York State in the land of the Mohawk Indians. She experienced the loss of her mother and father at an early age and had to overcome hardships and difficulties throughout her short life. Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, also known as the "Lily of the Mohawks," was the first Native American saint in the Catholic Church. She was born in 1656 in what is now New York. Her father was a Mohawk chief, and her mother was a Christian from the Algonquin tribe. When Kateri was only four, her parents and brother died from a smallpox epidemic. Kateri survived, but the illness left her with weak eyesight and scars on her face. After her parents passed away, Kateri was raised by her uncle, who was the new chief of their village. Although she grew up in a Native American culture that didn't know much about Christianity, Kateri learned about Jesus from missionaries who visited her village. She was very interested in the teachings of Jesus, and when she was 19, she chose to become a Christian and was baptized. This was a brave choice because not everyone in her village agreed with her new faith. Kateri dedicated her life to prayer, helping others, and caring for the sick and elderly. She took a vow to remain single, wanting to focus her life on serving God. Kateri faced many challenges and even had to leave her village because of her beliefs.
