Description
Havana has had through the time, a significance that has transcended the geographical frame of our archipelago. Founded in 1514, in the marshy south coast, it had a galloping existence, according to the obtained data of the history of those first years of the Hispanic conquest This way, with the discovering of the Channel of Bahamas, the Bay of Havana became the key point for the communications between the New and the O/d World. Then the primitive Havana moved to the banks of the river that the Indians called Casiguaguas and that the Spaniards baptized Almendares, to finally move to the banks of the Port of Carenas (Careenings) with the name of San Cristöbal de la Habana. The exceptional geographical position of the island of Cuba, at the doors of the New World, on the route from Spain to the Mainland, the rich territories of the continent that the Spaniards conquered successively, weighed extraordinarily in the destiny of Havana, converting it on the obliged port of meeting and provisioning of al/ the king's fleets, in their trips between the metropolis and its colonies, what contributed to encourage its development and a decorous modus vivendi, but, at the same time transformed it into the preferable objective of corsairs, pirates and filibusters. In the presentation of the Guide of Architecture of Colonial Havana, we read: Havana is one of the most beautiful cities of America and of the world. The changeful history and man's will, have convened it, after its almost five centuries, in an alive encyclopedia, although certainly needy of cares, of the urbanism and of the architecture, in an urban space that shows to the visitor multiple faces: a city of the old regime, practically folded back inside what was its walled enclosure, Renaissance fortifications, of Baroque churches and convents, in which crop up the Mudejar.
