Excerpt from inside "Note From Publisher"
Lewis Howard Latimer was a legend in his own time. The book you are holding was considered the "bible" on incandescent lighting and was the foremost reference in describing the process of heating an electric wire to create incandescence. Latimer joined Thomas Edison's Engineering Department of the Edison Electric Light Company in 1890. He played the role of the board's chief draftsman and expert witness for over twenty years. The inspiration behind the design of the cover of this book was to highlight the rich history Latimer had in the industry and as an inventor. The left patent drawing was that from Latimer's first incandescent lamp he designed with Joseph V. Nichols in September 1881 for Hiram Maxim of the U. S. Electric Lighting Company, U. S. Patent number 247,097. On the upper right hand corner is the updated 1890 Edison design he drew taken from this very book. He brought his knowledge of the process of manufacturing Carbons he patented under U.S. patent 252,386 from 1882. In fact, all of the drawings for this very book were done by Latimer himself.
