At this place a princely residence of the Brunonen (namesake of the city) can be traced back to the 9th Century. Towards the middle of the 12th century Heinrich der L?we "Henry the Lion" consolidated the Castle Square as the center of his leadership. The Cathedral and the lion statue bear witness of this time. Even today, most parts of the square respond to the medieval plan. However, the Dankwarderode Castle and the Chamber of Trade had originally a different location.

Das ehemalige Residenzschloss wurde 1838 als klassizistisches Geb?ude von dem Architekten Carl Theodor Ottmer errichtet. Nach den Kriegszerst?rungen und dem vollst?ndigen Abriss 1960 konnten 2007 zumindest die Fassaden wieder hergestellt werden. Heute beherbergt es die Stadtbibliothek, das Stadtarchiv und ein Museum, ist jedoch auch Teil des Einkaufszentrums "Schloss-Arkaden".
The palace oc the dukes of Brunswick, originaly built in 1838, was devastated in World War ll and the completely demolited in 1960. In 2007 the oriental facades were rebuilt in most parts true to the original. Nowadays the building is part of a shopping center. Furthermore, it houses the city library, city archives and galleries of the Metropolitan Museum.
