Description
Edward Hopper (1882-1967), whose works are considered the epitome of the depiction of American life, is one of the most prominent artists of the 20th century. This book takes a fresh look at Hopper's oeuvre and yzes it in dialogue with works of old masters that became inspiration for Hopper. The book takes into account the central themes of Hopper's painting and shows what a great role the Old Masters played in the development of his image strategies. Especially the art of Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) gained decisive importance here. It is not only about the striking compositional similarities - the works of both artists often show interiors with figures immersed in or paused in their activity - but about the interpretation possibilities that can be derived from this for the work of the American master.
