Ländliche Siedlungsstrategien im römischen Sizilien:

Description
Rural Roman Sicily has so far only been analysed in individual studies, but not in its entirety. The authors preoccupation with the topic goes back to the evaluation of the Roman evidence in the Agrigento Hinterland Survey. The island of Sicily was not completely characterised by cities in Roman times. While urban space flourished on the north coast and east coast, new forms of settlement emerged on the southern coast, which led to a lively rural area despite the absence of towns. Over the course of the Roman Imperial Period and Late Antiquity, a diverse settlement landscape consisting of vici, villas and farmsteads emerged, forming complex settlement systems. The new stacking sites on the south coast were also an important component of these new systems. This study examines various settlement landscapes in the Mediterranean region, focussing on Roman Sicily. However, individual examples from Italy, Spain, North Africa and Greece are also considered as comparisons, thus placing Roman Sicily in a wider context. The volume concludes with an extensive catalogue of finds from the Kamarina Survey.
