History and Origin of the Dictionary The dictionary is titled "Mets'hafä Säwas¿w Wä-g¿s Wä-Mäz¿g¿bä Qalat H¿adis" (Book of Grammar and Verb Forms and New Dictionary), and it was published in the year 1948 E.C. (Ethiopian Calendar).It was started by Mämh¿r Kifl¿ Giyorgis. It was expanded and elaborated upon by Aläqa Kidanä Wäld Kifle. It was revised and edited by Aläqa Dästa Täklä Wäld.
Key Differences of the New Edition This new edition differs from the original in three main ways:Alphabetical Order: The original edition was arranged in the ¿¿ ¿¿ ¿¿ ¿... "Abegede" (Abä-g¿-dä) order, whereas the new edition has been changed to the ¿¿ ¿¿ ¿¿ ¿... "Hälähame" (Hä-lä-¿a-mä) order. Language Translation: The original dictionary translated from Geez to Amharic. This new edition, however, has changed the translation from Geez to English, making it more accessible to English-speaking readers and researchers. Translation of Examples: The original book contained over 40,000 examples, quotes, poems, proverbs, etc., in Geez that were not translated in the Amharic edition. In this new English edition, these have been fully translated into English.
