Description
In volume 2, we are introduced to Ke Tianren, nephew of the protagonist in volume 1. Ke Tianren is a young man from a rural village in China. The novel follows his struggle to become a successful businessman through periods of tumultuous change in the seventies, eighties, and nineties, including the rise of Deng Xiaoping, sweeping economic reform, and rapid urban development. It follows his encounters with family members, teachers, and friends who shape his ambitions and moral compass. Tianren starts a martial arts school with his friends and uses deceptive tactics to accumulate wealth. He secures business deals through connections and manipulations, often taking advantage of state-owned enterprises. The novel also touches upon the experiences of Tianren's uncle, who struggles with poverty and seeks to provide education for his children. This novel highlights the moral compromises and unethical practices individuals resort to in pursuit of wealth and success in the business world, particularly the rapidly shifting milieu of China in the late-twentieth century.
