Born in the alpine district of Bumthang, Karma Ura went to Yangchenphug High School and Kanglung Junior College in Eastern Bhutan. While he was in St. Stephen's College in Delhi studying Indian History, he was awarded the JCR Third World Scholarship from Magdalen College Oxford to read Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE). He continued his education in the University of Edinburgh where he gained an M Phil research degree in Economics. He worked at the Ministry of Planning from 1989 to 1998. Since 1998 he has been working at the Centre for Bhutan Studies, now as its President. In 2006, he was conferred red scarf and sword with the ancient title of Dasho by His Majesty the Fourth King. On the National Day in 2010, he received the Druk Khorlo (The Wheel of Dragon Kingdom) from His Majesty the King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, for his contributions to literature and fine arts. Under the patronage of Her Majesty the Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck who built the Temple of Dochula on the mountain pass of Dochula in Thimphu, he and his students painted the murals.
