Description
Sof'town - Sophiatown, a name which evokes a host of memories, feelings and responses about one of South Africa's ' 'Golden Ages'. No matter what the realities were, and there were some harsh and unpleasant ones, Sof'town represented a South African ideal - a harmonious mix of cultures, colours, peoples of all races, art, music and daily life. The write Can Themba held forth in his 'House of Truth.' The Manhattan Brothers and other big band groups developed and expanded their music. Whites and blacks lived side by side. Gangsters paraded their fancy clothes and fancier ladies. It was hype, it was hip, it was the centre of the universe.... Or so it felt.... until the apartheid police came and tore it apart, moving all the black people miles away to what was to become Soweto. Much of the life, music, vibrancy and excitement, as well as much of the grinding poverty and oppression, was recorded by the magazine 'Drum'. This wonderfully evocative collection of photographs, quotes and extracts from the pages of these magazines once again conjures the spirit of Sof'town. This spirit, that ideal, must have resonance today, as South Africa strives towards achieving a non-racial society.
