Excerpt from Universal Pronouncing Dictionary of Biography and Mythology<br/><br/>But perhaps the most remarkable illustration of this tendency to adopt the native pronunciation of foreign names is found in his drama of Mary Stuart 3 where the poet. With the obvious intention of obliging his countrymen to pronounce the English names correctly. Invariably in his verse spells Lemmas Learn, although in the explanatmy (prose) parts of the play he as invariably writes it aes'ta. As we do in English. For the same reason, doubtless, he writes Baum: Boom. That his countrymen might pwnoume the name Boo'lm, nearly as it is spoken in England. Had he written it Bomn, the Germans might have placed the accent on the last syllable. As we often hear it pro nonneed in the United States. The Â mm of names occurring in poetry, as already intimated, Can readily be determined by tho metre; but the manner in which the poets pronounced the letters of a foreign name cannot be so easily astet tained, since it an be known only when the name ends a line in rhyme 3 and even then it is often extremely nno certain, as they appear to consider themselves entitled, in such cases, to much greater license than in the sec eentuation of words. Thus, we often see associated, in rhyme, words which correspond very imperfectly in sound, as my and lie, amm and hem. Etc. New theless, by comparing a number of passages, especially of those poets who are most remarkable for the cor rectness of their rhymes, we shall olten be enabled to ascertain the true pronunciation of a word or name.
