Quando nel 1892 Joseph Pulitzer offrì alla Columbia University un finanziamento per istituire la prima scuola di giornalismo degli Stati Uniti era opinione corrente che il fiuto per la notizia fosse un talento naturale e il mestiere si imparasse andando "a bottega" nella redazione di un quotidiano. Di ben altro avviso era il grande giornalista e editore, che in questo pamphlet del 1904 spiega perché giornalisti non si nasce, ma si diventa. Per formare un bravo professionista non basta l'ingegno: sono necessarie conoscenze storiche, economiche, giuridiche unite a una forte tensione etica nella ricerca della verità e a un profondo senso di responsabilità morale. Sono questi i presupposti di una informazione non asservita a poteri forti e a interessi privati. 'L'obiettivo della scuola è creare giornalisti migliori, che scriveranno giornali migliori, che serviranno la Repubblica in modo migliore': perché una stampa autorevole e libera che ha a cuore il bene pubblico è il primo baluardo della democrazia.
