Negli anni Quaranta viveva al Greenwich Village un letterato di nome Joe Gould che si presentava come un singolare barbone. Macilento e ubriacone, bazzicava le redazioni delle riviste letterarie; non poteva accettare un impiego, perché gli avrebbe impedito di continuare a scrivere la sua Storia Orale, costituita a suo dire, dalle conversazioni ascoltate e orecchiate per strada, al ristorante, nei dormitori, sui treni, al parco, ovunque la gente si riunisse e parlasse. Nel 1942 Mitchell gli dedicò un articolo sul New Yorker, Il professor Gabbiano, nel quale descriveva il personaggio. Dopo la morte di Gould, molti si misero alla ricerca della sua Storia Orale; nel '64 Mitchell decise di raccontare dall'inizio la storia del segreto di Gould.
