Although the highly original music of Charles-Valentin Alkan (1813–88) is now becoming familiar, his equally individual transcriptions have yet to be systematically documented in recordings. Alkan published a series of three albums of transcriptions which have never before been recorded in their entirety; this release is the first in a pioneering project to do just that. This CD presents his complete Mozart transcriptions, the composer whose music Alkan transcribed more than anyone else’s. Pianist José Raúl López examines Alkan’s art as a transcriber in the booklet’s extended essay.
