The book presents one of the most important and spectacular archaeological discoveries in contemporary history, that of the Assyrian civilization. Until the mid-19th century, the Assyrians were a ghost people, with only scattered references collected by classical authors and the Bible. Beyond that information, their entire civilization had completely disappeared. However, in 1843, French diplomat Paul-Émile Botta discovered the ancient city of Dur-Sharrukin (now Khorsabad, Iraq), founded by King Sargon II at the end of the eighth century BC. With this discovery, Botta finally brought to light the material remains of the ancient Assyrian civilization and gave rise to a new scientific discipline: Assyriology. The book is divided into two distinct parts. The first part presents Botta's biography, while describing in detail his excavations in Khorsabad and analyzing the impact that these excavations had on Spain at the time. The second part contains the first Spanish translation of the letters that Botta sent to Jules Mohl (president of the Société Asiatique), which were originally published in the Journal Asiatique between 1843 and 1844. These are documents of enormous value, through which the French diplomat first revealed one of the most sensational archaeological discoveries in history.
