Philosophische Trinitätsargumente im 12. Jahrhundert
By Jonas Narchi

Description
The doctrine of the Trinity, which is often considered abstract and obscure, played a very concrete role in the lives of medieval Christians. The Trinity was invoked in prayer, during church services and legal ceremonies, translated into images in art and opened up to the imagination in written visionary accounts. From the 12th century onwards, however, the idea of a triune God was increasingly problematised both inter- and intra-religiously, making it necessary to address the question of the Trinity in an argumentative manner. This interdisciplinary study reconstructs how various developments in the history of culture and religion motivated a variety of new philosophical approaches in the scholarly constellations of the 12th century, which pursued the goal of proving the Trinity in a purely rational way
