The Ghosts of Great ZImbabwe

The Ghosts of Great ZImbabwe

0 - Default Title
Description
Great Zimbabwe is an enigma. We know little of southern Africa before 1500. Archaeologists have pored over scraps of old pots, beads, iron tools and carbon dated bits of wood. Anthropologists wondered if modern cultural practices evolved from the Iron Age. Historians sifted through stories and myths for hints about prehistoric Zimbabwe. Much has been guess work. Until Portuguese traders and missionaries arrived in the 16th Century there was no written record. But there are clues to how those who resided in Zimbabwe lived: how they became wealthy and the city a centre of African trade. But these clues must be seen clearly and dispassionately, beyond the controversy that has surrounded the Ruins since they were introduced to the wider modern world in the Victorian era. Some of the old controversies have been widely dismissed, but new ones have grown. This book records of a journey into imagining life at Great Zimbabwe when its prestige and influence dominated the region.
