Description
[Swiftly Changing Times. Wittenberg and the Reformation in Electoral Saxony 1521/22] While Luther was at Wartburg Castle in 1521/22, a flurry of reform activity began throughout Electoral Saxony. There were differences in church policy between the Elector's domain and that of his brother, Duke Johann. This meant the Reformation took a different course in the two areas. This is clearly visible in the cities, from Wittenberg to Eilenburg, Grimma, Borna, Altenburg, Zwickau, Neustadt a. d. Orla, Jena and Gotha to Weimar. In addition, the Reformation historian Volker Joestel presents the activities of the peasant movement and the nobility. Closely linked were Reformation theology and social realities. Also at issue are the questions of how and why this hopeful awakening in the Electoral and Meissen district ended so quickly, while it persisted for another two years in Thuringia.
